Jada Pinkett Smith Once Said She and Will Smith ‘Are More Likely’ To Have ‘Disagreements’ About Trey Rather Than Willow or Jaden
Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith are known for being forthcoming. They’ve offered up parenting advice, tips on how to make a marriage last, and everything in between. But even they not perfect and they’re the first ones to admit it.
They’ve been together since the ‘90s and they, like celebrity and non-celebrity couples alike, argue. When it concerns their kids, Jada says she and the Hitch actor “are more likely” to disagree about Trey Smith.
Trey Smith is Will Smith’s son from his first marriage
Before Will and Jada became a couple, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star dated and eventually married Sheree Zampino. They got married in 1992 and in the same year became parents when their son, Willard Carroll “Trey” Smith III, was born on Nov. 11, 1992.
Will and Zampino’s marriage didn’t last and the two called it quits in 1995. Will admitted the divorce put a strain on his relationship with Trey but they’re now in a good place. Now 28 years old, Trey’s attended red carpet events with the rest of the Smith family multiple times.
Will and Jada Pinkett Smith have two kids together
After his split from Zampino Will met and fell in love with Jada. The two got married on New Year’s Eve in 1997. They welcomed Jaden Smith, now 22, on July 8, 1998, and a daughter, Willow Smith, now 20, on Oct. 31, 2000.
As adults, Willow and Jaden have discussed growing up in the spotlight as the kids of celebrities on the Smith family’s Facebook Watch program, Red Table Talk. As a kid, Jaden described his relationship with Trey as good. Today, the entire Smith family goes on vacations together.
Jada Pinkett Smith admits she’s ‘more lenient’ with Trey
Jada said in a 2011 interview with Redbook that when she and Will argue it’s usually about Trey.
“Our disagreements are more likely to be about Trey,” she said. “I’m more lenient with him than with anybody else in our family because technically I’m his stepparent, and I feel my job is to just love him, and I don’t want him to ever question that.”
At the time of the interview, Jaden and Willow were heading into their teen and tween years. As for Trey, he was in his early 20s.
Jada Pinkett Smith is close with her husband’s ex
In an October 2020 episode of Red Table Talk Jada sat down with Zampino. She admitted their divorce hadn’t been easy on her and that she probably should’ve stepped back and let Will and Zampino parent Trey.
“The beginning between us was rough, and here’s one thing I will say in hindsight,” Jada said. “Because I did not understand marriage, I didn’t understand divorce. I will say that I probably should have fell back.”
Today, Will and Zampino are successfully co-parenting Trey while the entire family remains close.
