The Vampire Diaries premiered in 2009 on The CW, and the world was never the same. The Vampire Diaries Universe further expanded when the network ordered its first spinoff, The Originals, which premiered in 2013. Legacies later followed in 2018, but as of the writing of this article, all three shows have ended, meaning that the TVDU may be over.

The CW canceled ‘The Vampire Diaries’ spinoff ‘Legacies’ after season 4

The Vampire Diaries ended in 2017 after eight successful seasons, while its spinoffs, The Originals and Legacies, sadly ended after only a few seasons.

The Originals aired for five seasons, from 2013 to 2018, on The CW. And Legacies aired for four seasons before the network canceled the TVDU show in 2022. Unfortunately, Legacies was one of The CW’s many cancelations as the network is currently going through the process of being sold.

On the bright side, executives at the network informed Legacies‘s producers that cancelation was on the table. So they were able to prepare for the end and wrap up The Vampire Diaries spinoff in a nice little bow.

Julie Plec reveals that she has an idea for a third ‘The Vampire Diaries’ spinoff

Following the Legacies series finale, Julie Plec, who co-created The Vampire Diaries and its spinoffs, talked with TVLine about the supernatural universe’s future.

“This is the end of one chapter, but we can use it to launch the beginning of another chapter, which is ultimately what we want to do when all is said and done,” Plec teased. “There’s absolutely hope for the future. [Executive producers] Brett [Matthews] and Kevin [Williamson] and I have an idea percolating in our brains that we just haven’t had the time to put down on the page yet.”

She continued, “But we definitely want to do another branch of the tree. It’s just a matter of when I guess.”

While we have no idea what Plec, Matthews, and Williamson are cooking up, there’s no doubt in our minds that fans will watch any The Vampire Diaries spinoff, especially if it includes former characters.

What would’ve happened in ‘Legacies’ Season 5?

Candice King, who starred as Caroline in The Vampire Diaries, returned to play the fan-favorite character during the second spinoff’s series finale. And heartbreakingly, she informed TVLine that she would’ve returned for more episodes had The CW renewed Legacies for a fifth season.

“This really had been in the works for a long time,” King explained. “With The Vampire Diaries, I worked throughout my pregnancy and my first year of my daughter being alive. I spent many, many hours away from my baby. I was back on screen six weeks to the day after Florence was born. So when it ended, even though I did The Originals for a bit, I really needed to take a break and be with my family.”

The actor added, “Lo and behold, when we were finally gearing up for Caroline to come back to the Salvatore School, the pandemic hit. And I was pregnant again. I had my fingers and toes crossed for a season 5. I was excited to finally have the opportunity to see Caroline play out this headmistress role.”

We have our fingers crossed that Julie Plec’s The Vampire Diaries spinoff idea includes Caroline Forbes.
