No topic is off the table when it comes to Red Table Talk. Despite being on the show with her mother and grandmother, Willow Smith has been open about being polyamorous and her dating life. On yesterday’s episode of Red Table Talk, Willow revealed that she practices polyamory. But, it’s actually not the first time she’s done this. Willow hinted at being polyamorous years ago.

Willow Smith comes out as polyamorous

On yesterday’s episode of Red Table Talk, polyamory was the subject and Willow revealed that she was polyamorous. She described the reasoning behind her decision.

“With polyamory, I feel like the main foundation is the freedom to be able to create a relationship style that works for you and not just stepping into monogamy because that’s what everyone around you says is the right thing to do,” Willow told her mother, Jada Pinkett Smith. “So I was like, how can I structure the way that I approach relationships with that in mind? Also, doing research into polyamory, the main reasons why monogamous relationships– or why marriage– why divorces happen is infidelity.”

When Willow’s grandmother, Adrienne Banfield-Norris, claimed that polyamory sounded like it was all about sex, Willow tried to explain further.

“I mean, I’ll give you an example,” she said. “Let’s say you haven’t always been the kind of person that wanted to have sex all the time. But your partner is. Are you gonna be the person to say, you know, ‘Just because I don’t have these needs, you can’t have them either?’ And so that’s kind of one of the reasons why I actually was interested in poly because I was introduced to it through kind of a nonsexual lens. In my friend group, I’m the only polyamorous person, and I have the least sex out of all of my friends.”

Willow has spoken about polyamory on ‘Red Table Talk’ before 2021

Though this Red Table Talk polyamory episode is where Willow’s polyamorous relationships “officially” came out, fans of the show may remember that she hinted at being polyamorous way back in 2019. After revealing that she was bisexual, she spoke about wanting to be with a man and woman at the same time.

“I love men and women equally and so I would definitely want one man, one woman,” she said. “I feel like I could be polyfidelitous with those two people.”

“I’m not the kind of person that is constantly looking for new sexual experiences,” she continued. “I focus a lot on the emotional connection and I feel like if I were to find two people of the different genders that I really connected with and we had a romantic and sexual connection, I don’t feel like I would feel the need to try to go find more.”

Unconventional Relationships: Can Multiple Partners Work?

Jada, Gammy and Willow explore alternatives to conventional marriage as they meet a “throuple” – 2 women and a man in a three-way romantic relationship. Plus, Jada and Willow embarrass Gammy by revealing their thoughts about multiple partner scenarios.

For Willow, monogamy seems more about ownership than actually loving your partner.

“This is the scariest thought that people shy away from,” Willow said on the June 2019 episode. “It’s the feeling of feeling like the person that you love is falling in love with somebody else. And that insecurity and fear just eats us alive. But that insecurity and fear is something that we need to overcome and something that we need to evolve out of and transmute that into something new and different that can actually be helpful and make us love more and more freely.”
